In the Company of the Elite

The scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced former financier and convicted sex offender, has broadened to include a large number of powerful and well-known individuals [1].  Epstein (who trafficked young girls with the help of Ghislaine Maxwell) regularly kept company with politicians, filmmakers, journalists, scientists, comedians, intellectuals, and royalty.

We may be shocked to learn these names, and appalled at the behavior exhibited.  We should not be surprised that the so called “elite” suffer from the very same sin nature common to all mankind.  Wealth may disguise that fact; power may effectively keep secrets from the public.  But the stain remains.

Undoubtedly, there are varying degrees of guilt.  Some will claim they never knew what went on.  Others will claim they knew, but did not participate.  Still others will simply deny everything.

God knows the whole story, whether we ever will or not.

  1. I know it isn’t a perfect fit for this example, but it does remind me of the famous Tacitus quote (Rare is the man who is fit for power, and never is the man who seeks it). For me, while the allegations and legal goings-on would increase significantly in the years that followed, there was public coverage of the Epstein ordeal as early as the mid-late 90s. Anyone still associating after that time–and our authorities that refused to prosecute–are worthy of condemnation and disdain, in my opinion.

    Have a great week, Anna.

    • Well said, Scott. I was reminded of the quote by Lord Acton: Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. These men did whatever they wanted to do, w/o regard to the consequences for their victims.

  2. One day the works of darkness will be uncovered!

  3. The world will always disappoint us in matters of justice as it does in matters of mercy, so how precious is the gift of faith that looks to Christ Jesus alone as Judge of all the earth and the Savior of his people who long for his return even as we groan with all creation.

  4. God will judge him very severely
