In a world where abuse of every kind is far too common and life, itself, often has little value this story of love and compassion stands out.

Brooke and Chris Vaughan of Lubbock, TX are attempting to raise $7000 for the purchase of a postural support seat for their disabled son, Maverick [1A].  The 20 month year old suffers from lissencephaly, a rare brain condition which occurs in 1 of 100,000 infants causing developmental delays, seizures, and other health issues [2].

The couple have been denied coverage for this equipment by their insurance carrier, though the boy’s neurologists, physical therapists, occupational therapist, and speech therapists have all advocated for its use.

“…I’ve met the most wonderful community of people because that’s what it is like, the disability community is a community of people that I never would have known.  Maverick taught us more about ourselves and about life than I had learned in my 24 years before I knew Maverick.”

–Brooke Vaughan [1B]

Since Maverick has therapy daily and frequent doctors’ appointments, Brooke is unable to work outside the home.  In an effort to earn extra income, however, she has taken to selling homemade sourdough breads and jams.  She is hoping to sell 790 loaves.

Orders can be placed on Facebook at Rolling Dough with Maverick https://www.facebook.com/people/Rolling-Dough-with-Maverick/61559820076297/.

Brooke, also, hopes that people will donate to the Lissencephaly Foundation Inc., PO Box 698, Shasta Lake, CA  96019, https://www.lissfoundation.org/.

The rest of us can only hope that insurance companies will learn something from the Vaughans about what it means to be human.

And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst’” (John 6: 35).

  1. I wish I could order some to Peru!

  2. So glad to see they are being overwhelmed with orders! Thank you for sharing their plight, Anna.

  3. I hear a story such as this all too often. I have looked back on the years we have paid insurance and wish we had taken that money and invested it, saved it, and just bought catastrophic insurance. 2023 I was in hospital 6 times and of course the bill was catastrophic. But the hospital forgave a lot of my bill because we applied for assistance. Never knew you could do that before. This is abuse from the insurance company. Thanks for exposing it.

  4. Es ist wirklich furchtbar, wie man Hilfesuchende behandelt und wie wenig auf sie Rücksicht genommen wird. LG M.
